BASIC GUIDE TO PURCHASE AND REGISTER A CAR IN NEW YORK

STEP 1

Before you do anything, please make sure that you really like the vehicle and you feel comfortable on it. This part look so obvious, but in reality you can be purchasing a vehicle not because you like it but because you been push by a salesman or are under stress by a relative or friend advice and is not exactly what you want, but the price look appealing to you and them.

STEP 2

Make sure you can pay the vehicle. This is another point that you think it may be obvious, but in reality, many people get on debt purchasing stuff at credit that they can not afford or sustain, understand that the cost of a vehicle is no the sale price, also depending on the vehicle type, you will pay insurance and registration. which will be in the long run added to the total purchase cost. Be smart and wait for a good deal, there are thousands of really good offers out there but with patience and doing your reporter homework you can find them, and get a deal that you always feel proud about it.

STEP 3

Make sure the vehicle have a tittle. This is another point that may look obvious, but many people buy the vehicle for the price and give the money and start driving, but never register because they never got the tittle, if something happen, you will need to proof that vehicle is yours, worse, the owner of the tittle can claim that vehicle from you and you will have to surrendered even if you give money to who knows who.

STEP 4

This step is attached to the Step 3, always make sure the tittle is clean and do not have a lien. Make sure this vehicle is not been used as a collateral or the owner still owes money on the vehicle, if you purchase this vehicle, you will be responsible for the debt or will loose the vehicle. make sure the tittle is totally clean. Also DMV will ask additional questions and documents, if the tittle have a lien, becuase with the vehicle the debt is also been transferred to you (YES just like that).

STEP 5

Find a respectable mechanic and ask him to review the vehicle for you. Unless you are a mechanic I will advice you to find a good mechanic and ask him to check the vehicle, even if you have to give him a couple of $10 or $20 for the favor. Trust me it will save you more if eventually for not doing this, the vehicle transmission fail, or have an over heating problem, just to mention a few common examples.

Fill out the Vehicle Tittle Application form MV-82

STEP 9

Now if you qualify you will be able to make the whole transaction online and will save a trip to DMV.

STEP 10

If you were able to do all online as requested, you will receive a confirmation email, with more instructions, about missing documents or approval, please read carefully the email. If all is done well, you will receive.

• Plate(s) for your vehicle (unless you requested a transfer of plates from another vehicle you have registered in New York). If applicable, any credit you have will be applied to this transaction.
• Registration window/windshield sticker.
• Registration receipt
• 10-day inspection sticker (if you did not get the vehicle from a New York State auto dealer).
• You will also receive an envelope for submitting original paperwork.

STEP 11

Send all originals in the envelope they provided to you, and make sure the inspection sticker is placed in your car windshield, remember is only valid for 10 days, get your own.

Congratulations, you are now ready to be pull over all the time by the police, and get parking tickets anywhere in New York City. (JUST JOKING).
